Are Margaritas Made with Rum or Tequila?
Typically, margaritas are made with tequila. However, it is possible to make a delicious margarita with rum!
Can You Make Margaritas with Rum?
Absolutely! Making margaritas with rum instead of tequila can be a simple swap with the right recipe.

Rum Margarita Recipe – Ingredients
These refreshing rum margaritas are made with just a few simple ingredients:
Rum – White rum works great in margarita recipes, but gold rum, dark rum, or any type of rum should work!
Orange Liqueur – Cointreau or Triple Sec are both great in this recipe. Don’t have orange liqueur on hand? You can substitute with 1 ounce of freshly squeezed orange juice and 1-2 teaspoons of agave syrup instead!
Lime Juice – Fresh lime juice is a staple in margarita recipes! So good. You can substitute lemon juice if you absolutely need to, but there’s nothing like the flavor of lime in margaritas.
Agave – If you’re using an orange liqueur, you may want to add a teaspoon of agave syrup if you enjoy a sweeter margarita. Regular or raw sugar works, too! If you prefer a less-sweet margarita, feel free to leave it out.
Ice – Add as much ice to your glass and cocktail shaker as you’d like!
Margarita Salt + Lime Wedge – And of course, you can’t have a margarita without that next-level salt rim on your margarita glass! It’s always optional, but so delicious if you go for it. You can use a margarita lime salt, but any type of coarse (or even regular) salt will work great!
