Gooey, buttery rice krispies treats topped with a layer of delicious dark chocolate and sprinkles (or any topping) to take them to next level. Once the butter is melted, add in the marshmallows, stirring often as they melt.
Add in the vanilla and maple syrup, continuing to stir just until the marshmallows melt.
Remove from heat and add in the rice krispies cereal.
Gently press the mixture into a 9x9" baking pan lined with parchment paper, making sure not to press too firmly (so that it's not overly packed in).
Refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
Make the Dark Chocolate Topping
Melt the butter and chocolate chips in a small bowl in the microwave, 30 seconds at a time and mixing in between.
Once the mixture is melted and smooth, remove the rice krispies pan from the refrigerator and pour the chocolate over them.
Lightly smooth out the chocolate and add sprinkles (or toppings of choice).
Place back in the refrigerator for another 30 minutes.
Cut the Chocolate Covered Rice Krispies Treats
Remove the chocolate covered rice krispies pan from the refrigerator and transfer to a cutting board.
Cut into about 12 rice krispies.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes
Don't press the rice krispies mixture into the pan too firmly! This will result in rock-hard rice krispies treats. The key is to very gently press into a pan, just until it's even.
You can allow the rice krispies treats to set in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or at room temperature for 1 hour.
Chocolate Covered Rice Krispies Treats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for 3-5 day!
