Blood Orange Margarita Recipe

As the temps get warmer and warmer, a cold, citrusy margarita sounds SO refreshing! Blood oranges are sweet and tangy, and they have a strong flavor that stands up well to the tequila. The Triple Sec enhances the orange flavor of the blood orange juice, and the agave helps round out the taste perfectly.

Adding a sweet citrus sugar rim to the glass as a garnish takes this summery drink over the top! Make one drink in a pretty cocktail glass, or follow the directions below to turn it into a pitcher for 4. Either way, you will love this Blood Orange Margarita Recipe!

What Do Blood Oranges Taste Like?

Blood oranges are delicious! Sometimes referred to as a raspberry orange, they have a slight berry flavor. They’re also a little more tart than a naval or mandarin orange – but not nearly as tart as a grapefruit. The aroma of a blood orange is strong and subtly floral, so adding the juice and zest to a cocktail adds a bright, freshness that is so tasty!

Ingredients

Citrus Sugar Rim

Optional, and can garnish as many as 4 glasses. Feel free to adjust the amounts to taste on each glass!

  • Zest from a Blood Orange or Regular Orange
  • Sugar

Margarita

  • Blanco Tequila – You can use reposado tequila (tequila that has been aged a little longer), but I prefer the crisp, fresh, herbal notes of white tequila, also known as blanco or silver tequila, for this margarita.
  • Blood Orange Juice – Fresh blood orange juice is so flavorful and the color is beautiful in this margarita.
  • Triple Sec – A sweet, orange liqueur that compliments all of the citrusy flavors in this margarita. You can substitute with Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or more blood orange juice if needed.
  • Agave – I love using agave as a sweetener in tequila cocktails because tequila is made from the agave plant. It’s the perfect pairing. Simple syrup could be used instead.

How to Make a Blood Orange Margarita

Making the citrus sugar rim isn’t necessary, but it is delicious and so pretty on the glass. Follow these simple steps to create a Blood Orange Margarita cocktail:

Make the Citrus Sugar Rim

Mix the zest and sugar on a plate and smash them together. Swipe blood orange juice around the outer rim of your glass and dip it in the citrus sugar. Place a few ice cubes in the glass and set it aside.

Mix the Cocktail

Add the margarita ingredients to a cocktail shaker along with 4-5 ice cubes. Cover it tightly and shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds. Strain the margarita into the prepared glass, serve, and enjoy!

Make it a Pitcher

You can easily make a pitcher of Blood Orange Margaritas to serve. This amount will make 4 cocktails.

  • 1 Cup Blanco Tequila
  • 1 1/4 Cups Freshly Squeezed Blood Orange Juice
  • 1/2 Cup Triple Sec
  • 1/3-1/2 Cup Agave Syrup

Mix the ingredients in a pitcher. Garnish the glasses with the sugar rim, fill with ice, pour, and enjoy!
