What is Almond Flour?

Almond flour is made from ground almonds. The process is pretty simple. The almonds are boiled to remove the skin, then ground and sifted into a fine flour. Almond flour is a healthy and gluten-free alternative to regular flour!

How Long Does Almond Flour Last?

If you store unopened almond flour in your pantry, it’s typically good for 2-3 months. However, if you store your unopened almond flour in your refrigerator, it can be good for 6-12 months and if you store it in your freezer it can last from 12-24 months!

What are the Benefits of Using Almond Flour?

Almond flour is a great gluten-free option and is rich in vitamin E. Studies have shown that vitamin E helps reduce heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Almond flour also contains magnesium, which has been linked to blood sugar control and lower blood pressure. Overall, almond flour is a healthy solution for baking!

Does Almond Flour Affect Baking?

Baking with almond flour usually results in a faster baking time. So you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on what you’re baking so that it doesn’t burn! One of the biggest benefits of cooking with almond flour is that it will extend the shelf life of your baked creations by adding fat, which in return, helps retain moisture.

How Much Almond Flour Do I Substitute for All-Purpose Flour?

Believe it or not, substituting almond flour for all-purpose flour requires a 1:1 ratio. Even though the ratio is pretty even, there will be some altering that needs to be done to your recipe. Almond Flour does absorb more liquid than all-purpose flour, so we suggest adding more of your rising agent to your recipe to help compensate.

Other Substitutions for All-Purpose Flour

Whole Wheat Flour

Whole wheat flour is made from a different variety of wheat than traditional all-purpose flour.  It’s made from bran, germ, and endosperm in the flour. Whole wheat flour provides more fiber and nutrients, making it another great substitute for all-purpose flour.

Oat Flour

Made from ground, whole grain oats, oat flour is gluten-free and is loaded with nutrients such as fiber, chromium, biotin, and manganese.

Rice Flour

A form of flour made from finely milled rice, rice flour has a higher fiber content than all-purpose flour and is also another wonderful gluten-free option.

Coconut Flour

Made from dried, ground coconut meat, coconut flour is rich in fiber, protein and plant-based iron. It’s great for baking and is an amazing gluten-free flour that’s also delicious!

Buckwheat Flour

This alternative flour is made from grain-like seeds but is not actually wheat. Buckwheat belongs to the pseudocereal family. It’s a rich flour that is good for baking. Buckwheat flour is also gluten-free, but be careful because sometimes this flour is contaminated with other gluten foods during processing, so be sure to read your labels.
